Saving sharks with InSeason Fish

Summary

One of the biggest contributors to the continued harvest of sharks in India is the consumption of shark meat within the country. Despite there being few targeted fisheries for sharks and rays, the bycatch of sharks is supported by relatively low-value domestic markets. By collaborating with InSeason Fish, this project aims to reduce the bycatch of sharks by promoting fishermen who use shark-friendly fishing practices.

Objectives

This project will focus on protecting sharks by reducing their bycatch along the Coromandel Coast, where 38 threatened shark species occur.

Status

Field surveys are ongoing, outreach to fishermen and seafood consumers is also ongoing.
